  • Session Information: The term ‘animism’ refers to the idea that all things possess an inherent energy or living spirit. In today’s modern world with environmental concerns on the rise, it is apparent that remembering our connections to the living earth is of growing importance. In this workshop we will engage in a hands-on experience of awakening our senses to nature through the creative process. Rachel will provide participants with opportunities to investigate and collect nature materials to create ephemeral works and mixed media sculpture. This workshop would suit anyone interested in intentionally exploring nature and land based art. Note: we will be outdoors for a portion of this workshop so please wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.
  • Presenter’s Bio: Rachel Schappert is a multi-faceted artist and arts educator based in Winnipeg, Canada. Her practice shape-shifts between sculpture, ephemeral installations and socially engaged art projects that explore the interconnected relationship between people and nature- focusing on themes of animism, ritual and collective joy. Schappert has shown her independent and collaborative work in galleries, parks and forests both locally and internationally.

  • Session Description: Hands-On Workshop
  • Session Information: In this workshop, Lisa will show teachers the complete process of graphic novel creation. Teachers will be able to help students develop strong characters and the worlds they live in through sequential art. You will write stories, draw character sheets, storyboards, consider panel structure and dialogue balloons with hand drawn, inked, and coloured images, and learn how to produce different styles of handmade books (for all ages).
  • Presenter’s Bio: A Winnipeg based illustrator, print maker and graphic designer. Lisa received her BFA(Honours) from the University of Manitoba. She works in digital, traditional pen and ink, and screen printing. A comic enthusiast, she values the art of storytelling through the medium. In her daily life Lisa also teaches adult and youth art classes at several local studios and schools.

  • Session Information: See how this inquiry project played out in a grade 7 & 8 art classroom and participate in a “colour walk” as we explore the neighbourhood by creating colour maps based on how specific places make us feel. After we will be creating works based on what we discover.  The success of this workshop will depend on your openness to engage in the inquiry process. We will be building meaning together. Note: Part of this workshop will be held outdoors, so please wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather!
  • Presenter’s Bio: Jonathan Dueck is an art educator with the Winnipeg School Division currently working out of Grant Park and is part of the Art21 Educators program.  He has been very interested in participatory models of art making and education for quite a while.

  • Session Information: Explore how to bring a cross-disciplinary and inquiry-based approach into your art classroom! Artist Chantal Dupas will share how inquiry has driven her own artistic practice and how this process can be utilized in the classroom to encourage engaged students and thought-provoking work. Participants will be given ideas on how to integrate the Science and Social Studies curriculum into art assignments followed by a hands-on demonstration to get you started!
  • Presenter’s Bio: Chantal Dupas is a visual artist from Winnipeg and teaches at Ness Middle School. She holds a BFA with Honours from the University of Manitoba and a BEd from l’Université de Saint-Boniface. She has also studied at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Yale University and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally and is in private and corporate collections including TD Bank, RBC, Scotiabank, the Province of Manitoba and the Winnipeg Art Gallery.

  • Session Information: Have you ever wondered whether you could learn how to use a potter’s wheel? Here is an excellent opportunity to find out! Spend the day at The Sounding Stone’s studio and receive top-notch instruction on the secrets of turning a lump of clay into a beautiful, functional piece of art. This session promises to be a lot of fun and should provide you with the necessary tools on how to approach this in your own classroom. Be sure to wear something you don’t mind getting a little dirty!
  • Presenter’s Bio: Teegan Walker is a Manitoba based ceramic artist with a strong interest in minimalist and functional dinnerware. He has studied at Brandon University with Lin Xu, taking classes in Wheel Throwing, Sculpture and Hand Building. His work has been exhibited across Manitoba and is the recipient of the 2018 Marilyn Levitt Award in Functional Ceramics. He is a member of The Stoneware Gallery and is on staff at The Sounding Stone.

  • Session Description: Hands-On Workshop
  • Session Information: In this session, participants will learn a short history about graffiti, its tools and its Winnipeg beginnings. Based on Pat's experience, participants will be led through the progression of graffiti lettering from the most simple tagging to more complex letter structures and their use in larger scale works. Each participant will design and complete a graffiti style office door name plate and get some hands on spray paint experience and paint on our wall and will be on display for all of Winnipeg to see. ​
  • Presenter’s Bio: Pat Lazo is a Winnipeg based visual artist, muralist and tattoo artist with roots in graffiti culture. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Manitoba School of Fine Arts in 2002. Lazo is a recognized figure in Winnipeg’s public and commercial art scenes as an artist, as well as through his position as Artistic Director and Co-Founder of Graffiti Gallery (Graffiti Art Programming), Canada’s first and only arts centre dedicated to hip hop and youth culture. Pat works with Synonym Art Consultation Wall-to-Wall Mural Festival as an advisor and production manager . Broadening the scope and practice of public art in Winnipeg is an important part of Lazo’s artistic and curatorial practice.

  • Session Description: Presentation & Hands-On Workshop
  • Session Information: This workshop is best for teachers of Grades 3 students and older. Crankies, or “moving panoramas” as they were known in the 1800s, were immensely popular with audiences throughout the world, bringing hand cranked, moving pictures to music performance and story-telling. This unique cross media art form offers exciting opportunities for inquiry, choice, integration and celebration of the arts. Participants in this session will spend the day at ArtsJunktion (www.artsjunktion.mb.ca) and create their own crankie to take back to the classroom. Participants will work in the beautiful classroom space and have the opportunity to “shop” for free classroom supplies.
  • Presenter’s Bio: Andrea Bell Stuart is an Early and Middle Years Educator. She has worked in Winnipeg School Division and Seven Oaks as well as Balmoral Hall School. Andrea has given countless workshops to teachers throughout her career. She now teaches Music and Art in the Faculty of Education at The University of Winnipeg.

  • Session Description: Presentation and Hands-On Workshop
  • Session Information: MORNING: Using the recently released MAWA Resilience Art Cards and Teaching Guide, featuring the artwork of 50 Indigenous women artists, Yvette and Lita will lead teachers through a variety of activities meant to engage students in looking at, thinking about, talking about and responding to these amazing contemporary artworks and the Indigenous perspectives explored within. Teachers of any grade level and subject area will leave this workshop with practical ideas and sample artwork creations to take back to their classrooms. This tool kit is entirely bilingual!  AFTERNOON: Jessica will demonstrate the style of beading found on the tops (vamps) of moccasins. She will share her knowledge on the history of beading, why people bead in the first place, and other things that come up in conversation. At the end of the workshop you'd learn the back stitch technique along with the fill technique, and leave with a supply list to start your own beading kit. This beading workshop will have the chillest vibes and will be a relaxing experience.
  • Presenter’s Bio: Yvette Cenerini (BFA, BEd) (Métis) is a visual artist who has taught art in elementary grade levels and who is an active member of the Winnipeg arts community. Lita Fontaine (DipArt, MFA) (Anishinaabe/Dakota/Métis) is a visual artist and art educator who has taught at the University of Manitoba School of Art and who has nearly 20 years experience as Artist in Residence for the Seven Oaks School Division. Yvette and Lita worked together to conceptualize MAWA’s Resilience Teaching Guide. Jessica Canard is a visual artist based in Winnipeg, Manitoba who works in a variety of mediums. She is an Anishinaabe Ikwe from Sagkeeng First Nation and has been beading and facilitating art workshops for over 10 years.

  • Session Information: Bring your student's art to life by taking this MAAE PD session.  Learn hands-on practical animation techniques which can be easily integrated into any classroom and on any budget.   Participants will be able to experiment with numerous animation styles and techniques, such as: hand-drawn, paper, cut-out, collage, sand, frame-by-frame, armature, classical, stop-motion, rotoscoping, and digital traditional approaches on iPads.  Participants should bring a USB and a smartphone.
  • Presenter’s Bio: Jamie Leduc teaches Animation, Concept Art & Project Management and is the Department Head of the Interactive Digital Media (IDM) Program at Sisler High School.  Jamie completed his Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours, Bachelor degree in Education at the University of Ottawa, Honours Specialist in Visual Arts at Queens University and his Vocational Education diploma at Red River College.   • Session Information: Are you looking for ways to add the energy of contemporary art and ideas into your classroom but aren't sure where to start? This workshop will empower participants with strategies for educators and students to expand their thinking through contemporary art. Stacey Abramson and Don Ball will present examples of successful teaching practices, including artist perspectives and student reflections on contemporary thinking. Attendees will experience practical and inclusive strategies, and be given ideas (vocabulary, references and short exercises) to take away and build upon in their own curriculum planning.
  • Presenter’s Bio: ​ Don Ball is an Art21 educator, a retired classroom practitioner in the Peel District School Board with art gallery education experience. Ball was awarded the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2017. Stacey Abramson is a visual arts educator at Maples Collegiate in Winnipeg. She is a former mentor in the Art21 Educators program, a practicing video artist and art critic.

  • Session Description: Presentation & Hands-On Workshop
  • Session Information: No previous art experience needed! In this session, you will learn and apply object-based teaching strategies while discussing and exploring materials in artworks. You will learn to explore the importance, relevance, and symbolism of the artist’s choices and build confidence incorporating Modern and Contemporary Art into your lesson plans. Learn to use great works of art as forums for interdisciplinary investigations in a variety of subject areas. The first half of the day will be spent looking deeply at a number of artworks and learning ‘Visual Thinking Strategies’. The second half of the day, participants will work alone or in small groups on a variety of projects that students could do in the classroom. 
  • Presenter’s Bio: Barb Bottle is a visual artist and art educator in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Located on Treaty One, the traditional land of the Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene People, and homeland of the Metis Nation. Barb graduated with a BFA honours from the University of Manitoba in 1990, and with a BEd in 2012. She teaches art in the Seven Oaks school division to Grades K-5. It is Barb’s goal to encourage all teachers to dive deeply and fearlessly into teaching Modern and Contemporary art to students of all ages and levels, in art class and across all subjects.

  • Session Information: In this full-day workshop, participants will be led on a tour of two exhibitions in the WAG, Kent Monkman's "Shame and Prejudice" and "Small Worlds," an exhibition of small sculptures made by various Inuit artists. Participants will then have the opportunity to be inspired and create their own "small world" in a mixed-media diorama. 
  • Presenter’s Bio: Colleen Leduc is mixed-media artist and a Learning and Programs Coordinator at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Colleen holds a B.F.A. Honours from the University of Manitoba, a B.Ed from the University of Ottawa, as well as a Certificate in Expressive Arts Therapy, and a Diploma in Art Therapy from the WHEAT Institute. She is passionate about inclusive programming and teaching individuals to use art as a voice.

  • Session Information: During this workshop participants will learn how to throw on the pottery wheel, developing the necessary steps it takes to create a piece of pottery. You will also experience hand building a simple project that will compliment the piece you make on the pottery wheel.
  • Presenter’s Bio: Crystal Nykoluk is a ceramic artist, potter and sculpture-maker living and working in Winnipeg. Her work is inspired by the irregular textures she encounters on her daily travels, and the pieces she creates forge a connection to the outdoors. Crystal graduated from the University of Manitoba in 2008 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours degree and currently works part time at The Winnipeg Art Gallery. She also teaches pottery classes out of The Edge Gallery while maintaining her studio practice.

  • Session Description: Hands-On Workshop
  • Session Information: Participants in this workshop will learn the basics for hand-building with clay. A variety of hand building techniques will be shown, along with ideas for projects. Elise will go over common problems and problem-solving techniques, and demonstrate new ideas for decorating and embellishing. Participants will be able to build their own piece(s), and will be able to paint them with underglazes. (For an additional $15, the pieces will be fired and glazed with a clear coat and ready to pick up the following week for those participants wanting to keep their work.)
  • Presenter’s Bio: Elise Nadeau is a ceramic artist living in Winnipeg. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in Ceramics from the U of M in 2010. She has since gone on to help found The Edge Clay center, instruct at Art City, and implement various types of ceramics programming at Ndinawe and various schools around Winnipeg.

  • Session Information: In this workshop, participants will select an existing artwork to explore throughout the day as they engage in learning experiences that address the four quadrants of the Visual Arts Curriculum. They will engage in hands-on exploration of 'Art Language and Tools' through drawing and painting, and gain an understanding of the 'Context' of their chosen artwork through inquiry exploration. Participants will engage in "Creative Expression" as they modify their artwork employing the postmodern principles of play, appropriation, recontextualization, text, and layering using digital media. A closing sharing session will take place in which participants will "Value Artistic Experience" as they discuss their own work and student samples.
  • Presenter’s Bio: Cathy Woods is a practicing artist and Visual Art Specialist who works in the Winnipeg School Division. Join her in the Art Studio at Wellington School for a day of innovative art learning.
