Art has the capacity to make visible and tangible the complex landscapes that form our identities. Art making and other forms of creativity provide an opportunity to reflect on our personal fears, dreams and struggles, thus creating the conditions for understanding our own journeys and sharing ourselves with others.
Join multidisciplinary Métis artist Jaime Black of Winnipeg, as she explores and reflects on the invaluable role of creativity in connecting with the self and others and how these connections can bring meaning and healing. Jaime Black’s art practice engages in themes of memory, identity, place and resistance and is grounded in an understanding of the body and the land as sources of historical and cultural knowledge. Her most prominent project to date is The REDress Project, an installation project to draw attention to violence against Indigenous women and girls across Canada. The REDress Project (image above) has been exhibited across Canada and internationally and is currently on display at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Jamie was recently awarded the RBC ON THE RISE Award by the Winnipeg Arts Council. This award recognizes the demonstrated promise of an emerging professional artist in any discipline. |

Deenie Lefko-Halas
This will be an “encore presentation” of Deenie’s popular 2015 SAGE session (but will also include many new ideas). Deenie will focus on experiences that enable young children to engage in real art-making while also creating and telling stories about their work. Deenie will share literature, slides, examples of young children’s artwork and writing, and proven processes and approaches to creating art that she has developed over decades of building arts-infused early years programs. A particular focus for this year will be placed on art experiences that deal with nature and the outdoors.

I Don’t Get It:
Contemporary Art’s Elusive Meanings
Sarah Swan
Contemporary art is difficult to understand for many people. But in this informal lecture, Sarah Swan will provide some practical advice for how to approach even the most difficult conceptual art, how to become more sensitive to its nuances, and how to bring it into the classroom. Becoming involved with the meaning-making of others can be an enriching experience. Visual art, Swan argues, helps us get inside the minds and hearts of other humans. For this lecture, Swan will draw on the art of local artists, and will also touch on controversial British and American works.

Build a Personal Tipi
Alfredo Coreas
Experiential learning creates an opportunity for students to engage and apply academic understandings through hands-on experience. In this session, participants will construct a five-six foot tipi, paint and draw First Nation themed designs. We will learn the significance of each component of a tipi. This experience will provide a context for including Aboriginal worldviews and perspectives, integrate subjects, and outcomes in any curriculum.

The Language of the Camera:
The Organic Building Blocks of Filmmaking
Randy Guest
Randy teaches filmmaking from a very organic, grass roots perspective. In a non-technology driven, hands-on approach, the primary principles of connecting imagination to environment to lens are explored. The workshop is far less about digital filmmaking and technical properties of the art form than about the building blocks with which storytelling on film are created and how to take these pieces from concept, to script, to frame, to scenes. First the frame is taught and how to "cheat" inside of it, making any part of any space become any "world" you wish. Basic composition, angles, and visual perspective are explored and applied with "in-camera edited" exercises. The results are broken down and examined as the building blocks that take a series of ideas and magically turn them into a flowing film scene. Time will be spent talking about and showing user-friendly filmic exercises and techniques for all grades, K-12. We conclude with discussions on how to apply a multitude of film techniques into every day classrooms, how to connect curriculum and what product(s) can be created with a film residency in your school.

“Create an original superhero inspired by a famous painting”. The starting point for this exciting project is a self-selected work of art. What are their special powers? Who is their alter-ego? Do they have a sidekick? Where is their secret hide-out? This engaging, open-ended project can naturally extend to creative expression in language arts, drama, and digital media. Colourful Art of Os Gemeos and Romero Britto in the Elementary Classroom
Andrea Bell-Stuart
The 2016 Summer Olympics were in Brazil this year; let’s look at some Brazilian art! In this session, participants will look at the art of Os Gemeos and Romero Britto. Britto is a Brazilian-American Neo-pop artist, painter, serigrapher, and sculptor. He combines elements of cubism, pop art and graffiti painting in his colourful, fun work. Os Gêmeos (Portuguese for “The Twins”) are graffiti artists, identical twin brothers (born 1974) from São Paulo, Brazil, whose real names are Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo. They became a main influence in the local scene, helping to define Brazil’s own style. These artists’ works are perfectly suited for art in the elementary classroom. Inspired by this fun, colourful art, and using simple subject matter and materials from the Artsjunktion depot, participants will paint and create in both two and three dimensions.

Learning From Character
Lasha Mowchun
This fun day of costume creation and photo taking will show teachers an easily adaptable lesson plan where students dress up and turn their learning into characters. Wouldn’t it be neat to see a concept like a weather system made into a water molecule outfit? Or a history lesson made visual by creating a handmade Nellie McLung outfit and a backdrop for her to act out getting the vote for women. Non-sewers need not fear! We will simplify the costume making experience by using paper, felt, fabric and glue guns. Participants will create costumes and backdrops which Lasha will then photograph. Participants will be encouraged to create their own costumes but if some participants are camera shy they can help other participants further elaborate their designs. At the end everyone will go home with photos to reference for future lesson plan development.
Lasha Mowchun has a BFA from the University of Manitoba with a major in video art. She has taught extensively in contexts including homeschool programs, Graffiti Art Programming, Turtle Island Neighborhood Centre, the Boys and Girls Club, Norquay Community Centre and Ralph Brown Community Centre. IntRo to Handbuilding with Clay
Elise Nadeau
In this workshop, participants will learn the basic techniques needed to hand-build with clay, as well as the common mistakes people make (and how to avoid and fix them). Create a cup or bowl without the use of a pottery wheel - get inspired with great ideas to use in your classroom. Raw earthenware (unfired clay sculptures) can be taken home after the workshop (included in price), or fired by the instructor and picked up the following week ($10 fee). Please bring an apron – or wear clothing that can get dirty!
Elise Nadeau is a prolific ceramic artist, the Director of the Edge Gallery and Urban Art Center, and a ceramics instructor at Art City. Along with Mike Pagtakhan (Point Douglas City Councillor), she helped found The Main Street Clay Community Center, now known as The Edge Clay Centre. http://www.edgevillage.com/artist-gallery/elise-nadeau/

Raku Firing
Dawn Chaput
You will have the chance to experiment on pre-made tiles, trays and forms built by the artist specifically for this workshop. Spend the morning glazing, making tin foil saggars and planning out your horsehair or feather designs before the afternoon outdoor firing. This intriguing firing process requires our pieces to be removed from the kiln at bright red heat and then be subjected to post-firing manipulations to create finishes only achievable through the raku method! Dawn will provide safety gear and clear instruction. She will also require hair to be tied back, closed-toe shoes and natural fibers to be worn. Participants will take home their finished works and the intangible gifts of this experience.
Dawn Chaput is an engaging ceramic artist and generous instructor that has facilitated numerous workshops and taught pottery through the Leisure Guide, in classrooms, and privately at her home studio for the last decade since graduating with her BFA. Full Day Session Type: Hands-On Workshop Best For: Middle Years / Senior Years OFFSITE LOCATION: This workshop will take place at Dawn’s studio at 3440 St Mary’s Road (just past the Perimeter by Sage Gardens) *Additional Lab Fee: $20 Payable at time of registration. |
