Classrooms from all across Manitoba came together to take part in the Love Grows Postcard Project - developed by Stacey Abramson at Maples Collegiate. The project came out of a conversation Abramson had with a former student about feeling helpless about the Covid-related deaths at local personal care homes. The word of the project spread via social media,.

Students of all ages created postcard-sized artworks with messages of hope, love and connection on the back that were sent out to over 1000 care home residents and frontline workers. Other schools also put their own spin on the idea creating everything from clay hearts to Christmas decorations to canvas works.

The recipients of a Love Grows Postcard also received a small leaf on which they could write a wish. This wish leaf would be displayed on a wish tree, inspired by artist Yoko Ono's Wish Tree Project. The goal was for students and staff to find another level of connection with the residents who had been gifted their work. The project is continuing to grow with schools around North America taking part.

SUPER STORIES: A Collaborative Book Project
By Dawn Knight @ Fort Richmond Collegiate with Matt Reimer @ Oakenwald School

Picture
Book cover design: illustrated by Mahi P. (Grade 12), based on an original story "The Statue of Okayzee and the Power" by Charlie S. (Grade 3)

Grade 12 students at Fort Richmond Collegiate collaborated with Grade 3/4 students at Oakenwald School to develop a book about superheroes. Oakenwald student writers were challenged to create "origin stories" - how an (original) superhero came to be.

They invented fascinating new superheroes like Gold Wolf, Cool Sock Guy, Wind Girl, Iron Jaw and Moonlight - and then met virtually to consult with Fort Richmond Collegiate illustrators to discuss how they wanted their stories to look.

Some stories were illustrated digitally while others were rendered with more traditional art materials like coloured pencils, collage and paint. The collection of stories were published locally, each student received a copy of the book, and copies were given to both school libraries!
